Tibet is currently under the administration of the People's Republic of China, a situation that the Central Tibetan Administration considers an illegitimate military occupation. The position of the CTA is that Tibet is a distinct nation with a long history of independence. The current policy of the Dalai Lama, however, is that he does not seek full independence for Tibet, but would accept Tibet as a genuine autonomous region within the People's Republic of China. Naomi Klein![]() Around the world in Britain, the United States, Asia and the Middle East, there are people with power who are cashing in on chaos; exploiting bloodshed and catastrophe to brutally remake our world in their image. They are the shock doctors. Thrilling and revelatory, The Shock Doctrine cracks open the secret history of our era. Exposing these global profiteers, Naomi Klein discovered information and connections that shocked even her about how comprehensively the shock doctors' beliefs now dominate our world - and how this domination has been achieved. Raking in billions out of the tsunami, plundering Russia, exploiting Iraq - this is the chilling tale of how a few are making a killing while more are getting killed. German War Graves Commission / Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e. V.![]() The German War Graves Commission (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge) is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of German war graves in Europe and North Africa. Its objectives are: "acquisition, maintenance and care of German war graves"; "tending to next of kin"; "youth and educational work"(which includes programmes of reconciliation and rehabilitation for the former child soldiers of Sierra Leone); and "preservation of the memory to the sacrifices of war and despotism". It was founded as a private charity on December 16 1919 as the recognised Commission under the provisions of Article 224 of the Treaty of Versailles. By the 1930s, the Commission had established numerous cemeteries for German World War I dead. During World War II, the Volksbund's work was mostly carried out by the Wehrmacht's own graves service. After World War II, the Volksbund resumed its work in 1946 and soon established more than 400 war cemeteries in Germany. In 1954, Chancellor Adenauer, tasked the Volksbund with the establishment, care and upkeep of German war cemeteries abroad. Today, it maintains 827 military cemeteries in 45 countries with about 2.3 million dead and its work is carried out today by 9,000 honorary and 536 full-time employees. Now that the Cold War is over, the Volksbund has access to Eastern Europe, where the bulk of World War II German casualties occurred. In the last few years, 190 World War I cemeteries and 300 World War II cemeteries in eastern, central and south-eastern Europe have been reconstructed or rebuilt. About 32 cemeteries are currently under construction or renovation and about 584,000 bodies have been buried in new graves.
